The RM 055 is the reference that convinced a lot of people a tonneau case could be a sports watch. Ours keeps what matters: the layered carbon case, the white flange that frames the open movement, and a weight that disappears on the wrist.
Why this reference
Most of the Richard Mille catalogue is built around a tourbillon. The RM 055 is not. It is a hand-wound, time-only skeleton with a huge white rubber strap and a case that looks carved rather than machined. That makes it one of the few references where a well-made reproduction can get genuinely close, because there is no complication to fake and nowhere for a sloppy movement to hide.
The pieces photographed on this page are the ones we ship. Same light, same backdrop, no renders. If a batch changes, the photos change with it.

Case: layered carbon, not painted steel
The bezel and caseback are cut from a layered carbon composite. Each layer is laid at an offset, so when the block is machined you get the wavy banding that runs around the flanks. No two cases carry the same pattern. The mid-case sits between them, held by the twenty spline screws that run through the whole stack, and the whole thing measures 49.90 by 42.70 millimetres and sits 13.05 millimetres tall, matching the footprint of the original.
The screws are functional. They thread into the mid-case and clamp the gaskets, which is why the case stays dry at 50 metres rather than just looking the part. The crown is a two-piece rubber-clad design with a white insert and winds with the slightly heavy, grainy feel a hand-wound movement should have.

Movement: what you see is what runs
The dial side is entirely open. The barrel at twelve, the going train down the centre, the balance at six and the white-tipped skeleton hands all sit under a flat sapphire. The bridges are finished in a matte dark grey with polished bevels on the visible edges, and the balance runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour so the seconds hand sweeps rather than ticks.
Before the case is closed we regulate every movement on a timing machine in three positions and then let it run a full day on the bench. The target is a daily rate inside plus or minus five seconds, and anything outside that goes back to the bench rather than into a box.

On the wrist
The one number people ask about is weight. The piece on the scale in the gallery reads 35.92 grams with the strap fitted. That is light enough that the watch registers more by its size than its mass, which is exactly the sensation the reference is known for. The white rubber strap is thick, soft and vented on the inside, and closes with a folding clasp that mirrors the case screws.
At 42.7 millimetres wide the RM 055 wears large, but the curved caseback and the way the strap drops straight down from the lugs keep it planted on a 16 to 19 centimetre wrist. It is not a watch that hides under a cuff. It was never meant to.

Where it differs
We would rather you knew. The caseback engraving is shallower than on the original, the crown rubber is a slightly different durometer, and the movement, while a genuine skeleton calibre finished to this spec, is not the manufacture calibre of the original. If any of those matter to you, this is not the right watch. If you want the look, the weight and the feel of an RM 055 that you can actually wear every day, it is.

Questions
Asked about the RM 055
Is the weight really 35.9 grams?
Yes. Every piece is weighed with the strap fitted and the reading is in your QC photos. Expect a few tenths of a gram of variation between pieces.
Can I swim with it?
It is tested to 50 metres, so a swim or a shower is fine. Do not operate the crown under water and avoid hot tubs, which are hard on any rubber gasket.
How accurate is it?
We regulate to within plus or minus five seconds a day across three positions before shipping.
Can I get a different strap colour later?
Yes. Spare straps are available in white and black and swap with a screwdriver in a few minutes.
